They dubbed her Battlin’ Bella, and it wasn’t meant as a compliment. Male legislators quaked in their shoes when Congresswoman Bella Abzug, the feisty feminist from the Bronx took the House of Representatives by storm in 1970 and kept them on their toes for a decade to come. With her flamboyant trademark hats, her street-smart chutzpah and an outspoken passion for equality, Abzug emerged as the unstoppable champion for women’s rights, civil rights, and legal protections for LGBTQ+ citizens. Director Lieberman (THE AMAZING NINA SIMONE) delves into a career without precedent that began on the streets of Manhattan and trail-blazed the way for female leaders of the future including Kamala Harris and Nancy Pelosi. Abzug’s colorful story comes to life through newly unearthed home movies, audio diaries, and news footage, and features interviews with Hillary Clinton, Barbra Streisand, Gloria Steinem, Shirley MacLaine, and many more. Winner of the Library of Congress Lavine/Ken Burns Prize for Film, and a Writers Guild of America 2024 Nominee.
